PHOENIX, ARIZ. — SciLine, a free service for journalists based at the nonprofit American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Arizona Luminaria, a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to local news and community-centered journalism, are partnering to host an in-person event, Living with Uncertainty: The Community Impacts of Immigration Raids on Tuesday, February 10 in Phoenix. The event will bring together journalists, scientists, and subject-matter experts to examine how immigration enforcement actions affect Arizona communities.
The program will explore the psychological, social, and economic ripple effects of immigration raids, arrests, and deportations, drawing on both academic research and on-the-ground reporting. Panelists will discuss what scientific evidence shows about how these enforcement actions impact families and communities—both directly and through a broader climate of fear and uncertainty—and how journalists can accurately and responsibly cover these issues amid increasing politicization, polarization, and misinformation.
The discussion will convene scientific experts alongside local journalists for a focused exchange on best practices for reporting on immigration enforcement and its consequences, with an emphasis on evidence-based context and ethical storytelling. The program will be followed by a reception with complimentary drinks and snacks.
This event is open to journalists and subject-matter experts in the Phoenix area and across Arizona, who can register here to attend. The event is closed to the general public.
