Federal and state lawmakers are taking aim at two vaccine components: thimerosal, which is already restricted in some states and is now being banned in flu shots nationwide, and mRNA—for which  the Trump administration has cut research funding, while various states have proposed legislation including proposals to ban themprohibit their use in children, or designate them as weapons of mass destruction. On August 27, 2025, SciLine interviewed Dr. Kawsar Talaat, an associate professor of global disease epidemiology and control at Johns Hopkins University, who studies vaccines.

Super: Dr. Kawsar Talaat – Associate Professor, John Hopkins University
“mRNA is the fastest technology that we have right now to develop vaccines. And so canceling research using mRNA vaccines will prevent us from having vaccines available. When the next pandemic happens. A lot of the studies that were canceled were, for example, mRNA vaccines against avian flu. And we know that avian flu has been spreading in birds, in cows. It’s been infecting people. It could potentially be the next pandemic virus. We don’t know if it will be, but it could potentially be next pandemic virus and so developing a vaccine against it is really critical.”
